Waioka Pond (Venus Pool)

Updated: Feb 28, 2019

A freshwater waterfall falls into the saltwater ocean and creates incredible cliff jumping.

Cliff Jump into the Waioka Pond (Venus Pool). Freshwater meets Saltwater.

The Waioka Pond is found late in the Road to Hana tour, but I've found on more than one occasion that it is a good opportunity to get reinsured after all of those twists and turns.

Also know as the Venus Pool, the parking area is mostly inconspicuous. There is only room for about six vehicles to park along the road. After you park, you may notice some fruit set out on a stone wall that goes by the honor system.

You'll pass through a gate that somewhat gives you the message of "enter at your own risk" and continue along a path through a field. Now the land here is private property, so to avoid any trouble, make sure your'e respectful as you pass through.

Eventually, you will come to an area with trees where you can descend to the rocky area. When you emerge from the tree, you'll see the stream that forms a small waterfall and drops into the pool that merges with the saltwater of the ocean.

Some may explore the freshwater pools above depending on the water levels, but must simply set down their gear and begin to jump from the surrounding rocks.

Floating in the Venus Pool, where freshwater meets saltwater.

There is a variety of jumps that can be made from differing heights. Typically the water is deep enough to avoid harm from any height, but it wouldn't hurt to scout the depth before jumping. Hopefully the crowds are limited (and they should be due to limited parking), and you shouldn't have a substantial wait before being able to jump. In 30 minutes, I probably jump 12 jumps in from varying spots.

Two items that I would largely recommend. First watch the waves out in the ocean. If there is a particularly large one, it could make exiting the pool difficult or push you into the rocks. Secondly, keep an eye on the mountains above the pools. If it looks dark and likely to rain, you want to exit because a flash flood is likely to come pouring through the small canyon and dump out into the pool

Know Before You Go

  • Keep an eye on the mountains above. If you see rain clouds, you may want to make your exit quickly due to flash flooding.

  • This is deeper into the Road to Hana journey, so make sure you're watching the time throughout the day so that you don't arrive too late.

  • Footwear with good traction is a must for the last part of the hike. Many sharp and often hot rocks.

  • The rocks can get slippery, so ensure your footing before proceeding,

  • The field is considered private property as understand the risks of trespassing.

Video

The video below provides views of the short hike to the pool, the small waterfall that flows into the pool, and jumps from different levels above the pool.

Location

Park at the address indicated below. There are roughly 6 spots for visitors to park at. You'll have to hike 0.3 miles through a field and down a small forested area to get to the pool.
