Upper Waikani Falls (Three Bears)

A waterfall on the Road to Hana known for its trio of waterfalls.

Upper Waikani Falls (Three Bears) Waterfall at high flow - Road to Hana

While people rarely refer to it as Upper Waikani Falls, that happens to be the original name. The more more well-known name is Three Bears. Now there is probably a dozen spots known "Three Bears" throughout the United States, so ensure you're visiting Maui for this one.

The name likely stems from the three sections of falling water, which are barely visible above due to the significant water flow upon our visit.

Unfortunately, this waterfall is tougher to see beyond your vehicle as parking is very sparse and more than a few steps from the waterfall. We did manage to snag one of the nearby spots and made the lengthy walk down to the bridge. From the far side of the bridge, you can get a pretty good view of the falls as well as many taller water flows coming down the cliffside.

I've view images of individuals much closer to the falls, but there did not appear to be a quick way down. With so many other waterfalls that you can access on the way to Hana, it's probably not worth exploring beyond the bridge.

Definitely a more compelling waterfall with less flow, but always appreciative of seeing a waterfall in any form!

  • Parking is extremely limited for this waterfall. You're going to have to be lucky or arrive very early for a closer look.

  • Probably a 3-5 minute walk from the parking spot to the bridge.

  • Traffic is constantly passing by these falls, so watch out for oncoming vehicles as your cross the road.
