Universal City Walk

Shopping and entertainment district just outside of Universal Studios.

King Kong overlooks the Universal City Walk - Hollywood, CA

Just a short train ride from the Hollywood Walk of Fame is the Universal City Walk, where there is a multitude of shopping and entertainment options without the big price of Universal Studios.

The first thing you'll notice as you walk up the main corridor is the larger than life signs hanging in front of every business. While I don't know for certain, it seems to be a prerequisite of opening a storefront on the city walk.

Some of the more notable signs include King Kong by the movie theater, the dragon by the fountains, the giant guitar outside of Hard Rock, and the Raiders helmet outside the Raiders store (which by the way, play in Las Vegas). Recently, the Portland staple of Voodoo Donuts has added their signature donut, complete with pretzel rod.

While restaurants seem to occupy most of the space, there are some retail stores as well as a movie theater. iFly always seems to have a crowd for indoor skydiving and there are frequently outdoor concerts in front of the Hard Rock cafe.

Know Before You Go

  • There is a large parking fee for the Universal Studios parking lots, so make sure you understand the charges before going.

  • The complex is an out and back model and unfortunately it does not loop around.

  • The food court is easy to miss - take the escalator after the giant red dragon.

The video below shows a walk through the Universal City Walk.

Location

Found at 100 Universal City Plaza in the town of Universal City, CA (yes, Universal has its own city complete with fire department). On the Metro Red Line, its the Universal City stop. After you exit, the train, there is a shuttle that will take you up to the City Walk. If arriving by vehicle, it's best to exit off of the 101 and follow signs to parking. The parking has multiple pricepoints, so understand the pros/cons prior to visiting.
