Some of the most unique brews we've ever encountered
Our second brewery stop at was at Toasted Barrel Brewery, found just a bit north of downtown Salt Lake City. The location is easy to miss as its recessed a bit lower than the street that approaches it.
The server told me that the brewery had been open for about three years and unfortunately that covid led to the closure of their second location. Their focus seemed to be on vintage aged sours and high alcohol barrel aged beers.
Despite a relatively unassuming exterior, the interior of this tasting room was beautiful. The tables sat upon large barrels, the walls with decorated with artwork from the bottles, the restrooms had keg handles on the sink with a beer bottle soap dispenser. From the tasting room, you could be the brewing process taking place through windows.
They have may of their flagships such as the Blood-Orange Gose, Phineas (Sour Raspberry Vanilla), and a Black Currant Sour Ale. Beyond these, they often have limited releases (we tried the Huckleberry Cream Ale) and even some ambitious seltzers (we tried the Dragon Fruit Banana).
My favorite aspect of the brewery was the artwork on the bottles. Each of their flagship flavors had an animal dressed in some quirky outfit as shown in the photos below. They even made a black rye saison for a local condor to celebrate its 60th birthday.
This was easily one of my favorite breweries I have ever been to due to the incredibly friendly server and the unique flavors of the beer. Despite their limited hours, try to squeeze in a visit to their tasting room.
Know Before You Go
Hours are very limited. Only 2 PM to 8 PM Tuesday through Saturday.
Only four beers allowed at once in a single flight.
It's a small tasting room, so if you go at peak hours, it may be difficult to secure a seat.
