The Gazebo - Maui

Updated: Apr 13, 2019

It's not even a debate - this is the best breakfast in Maui!

Shrimp & Pineapple Fried Rice and Macadamia Nut Pancakes

We booked our trip to Maui a few weeks in advance due to the unpredictability of our work schedules. Unfortunately, it coincided with Valentine's Day and President's Day weekend, so most lodging in our price point was booked up.

We ended up securing a room at Napili Shores, which left a lot to be desired. One saving grace however, was that there was a breakfast/lunch spot known as Gazebo on site.

During a chance discussion with a couple at the Maui Brewing Company, they told us to ensure that we were lining up for a spot at 6:45 for the 7:30 open. It was certainly painful waking that early and waiting 45 minutes for the open, but it's absolutely the best strategy.

We were first in line and within 20 minutes, there was over 20 people in line behind us. Scanning the dining area, I noticed fewer than 15 tables so anyone arriving much after 7 AM would be in line for a bit of a wait.

After watching the waves (and possibly spotting a whale), having some of the complimentary coffee, as first in line we had our choice of tables. Despite the heavy rainfall, we easily picked the table with the ocean view.

To no one surprise, the service was absolutely spectacular as the server was making great recommendations, willing to substitute, and seemingly ready to answer any question that we had.

We ended up going with the large plate of fried rice (shrimp and pineapple), and the macadamia nut pancakes (also with bananas and pineapple). As an added bonus they offered coconut syrup, which after trying will leave you asking yourself why is isn't served at more places.

The pancakes in itself would be enough of a meal, but via a tip from our new friends Ben and Susan, it made for great leftovers the next morning.

Everything except the weather was so damn perfect, I'd consider flying to Maui just to eat here again. Be sure to schedule a visit here, but ensure your alarm is set to be there before 7 AM!

Know Before You Go

  • There will be wait times from the moment it opens, even on bad weather days. Just get there early!

  • The restaurant opens at 7:30 AM and closes at 2 PM

  • Part of the restaurant is open air, so you could get wet if it rains.

Location

Found at the Napili Shores, on the water and right by the pool. The parking spaces are tight here, but you shouldn't have any challenges finding a spot. If you walk along the water, you should have no issue finding ... the large gazebo.
