The Codfather Seafood & Sushi

Popular restaurant offers seafood a la carte.

Codfather Seafood - Crayfish, Lobster, Prawns - Cape Town, South Africa

As we were finishing up at Klaserie Sands, one of the guests recommended that we try The Codfather restaurant in Cape Town, so we stopped in just a few hours after our arrival.

We found the restaurant roughly a block off of the main strip in Camps Bay and ascended a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant.

The first thing we were asked upon arrival was if we had reservations. The restaurant is immensely popular and often require a reservation in advance. Fortunately for us, they were able to fit us in prior to the dinner crowd.

Upon being seated, a server will walk you over to the seafood counter were they have a variety of choices local to South Africa.

Guests simply choose which varieties and which size that they want of each size. The "chef" then weights each one and provides the cost, so that you know what you're paying for up front. The value is absolutely incredible - our meal that cost roughly $35 would have been upwards of $200 in the United States (Tuna, Kingklip, Butterfish, Prawns).

The chef then goes to prepare your meal with whichever sides that you may have designated (we chose rice and vegetables).

While, we waited, we enjoyed a bottle of Pinotage and admired the fish in the aquarium above our table.

Before too long, our meal arrived in a large pan complete with lemon and lime wedges. Off to the side, they provided a flight of sauces to enjoy with the meal.

I'm not sure if it was the excitement of arriving in Cape Town, but it was certainly the most enjoyable seafood experience that I've ever had. We loved the food so much that we made a reservation for two nights later.

Be sure to stop by while you're in Cape Town, but be careful to not get carried away at the seafood counter. It's very easy to order much more than you'll be able to eat!

Know Before You Go

  • Utilize their website to make reservations in advance as it is often crowded.

  • You will need to climb a small flight of steps to get to the restaurant.

  • The restaurant also offers a sushi bar inside.

  • Start small - while it may not look like a lot of fish when you order, once the rice and vegetables are added, it tends to become a large meal quickly.
