Breakfast spot where you actually get you craft your own pancakes at the table!
It may sound like something out of a Seinfeld episode, but at Slappy Cakes, guests can cook their own pancakes at the table.
Now, why would someone want to go out to eat and pay to make their own pancakes? Well, it's incredibly fun, unique, and you don't have to clean up the mess.
While the nearby Gazebo Restaurant gets a lot of the breakfast crowd, Slappy Cakes should not be overlooked. When we arrived, there was a substantial wait time, but they did offer coffee in the waiting area and had a pancake artist on hand to show off her skills.
Before long, we were seated and ordered a traditional egg and potato breakfast to go with our pancakes. For the Do It Yourself pancakes, you start by choosing a batter (buttermilk, chocolate, gluten-free/vegan, or the seasonal option). Next, you pick your "fixins," which had 18 options including mango, cookie & cream crumbles, chocolate chips, shredded coconut, and macadamia nuts. Lastly, you can add Toppings for after the pancake is cooked. These include peanut butter, lemon curd, and crispy bacon.
Your batter comes out in an eight ounce squeeze bottle. By now, the cooking surface is hot and you're free to make the pancakes at your own risk. It's fun because you can try different portion sizes with different mixtures of the fixins and toppings.
I'm not sure if it was the freshness of the pancakes, the types of ingredients we added, or simply the ambiance of cooking your own pancake in a restaurant, but I found these to be some of the best pancakes I've ever tried.
The service was great as well. Wish we had an establishment like this in Southern California as I'd love to try it again!
Know Before You Go
Weekend mornings are likely to be busy and have a wait. Pass the time by enjoying the coffee set up inside.
There are hot grills in the middle of your table, so if you have children that can't control themselves, this might not be the spot for you.
You would be surprised how much 8 ounces of batter and a few fixins will fill you up. Start light and order more if you're unsure on how much you will eat.
There is also a bar area to get your favorite adult beverages.
