A favorite Hawaiian Dish with a vegetarian twist!
Whenever we travel, we always try to cater our meals to local cuisine and new experiences. A favorite Hawaiian dish is the loco moco, which typically consists of white rice, a hamburger patty, fried egg, and brown gravy. What makes Nalu's South Shore Grill unique is that they offer a spianch-tofu-quinoa patty (rather than hamburger) and mushroom gravy (rather than traditional). They also offer it with a side of their famous macaroni salad to round out the meal.
After a stop at the Maui Brewing Company, we made our way to Nalu's location, which required navigating through quite a bit of traffic. When we entered, we were surprised to find 3 chickens roaming the premises and picking up any scraps that they could. Not sure if this is a normal occurrence or not but, appreciated their presence.
We took a seat at the bar and ordered a Bloody Mary before our food came out. Honestly, it was one of the less memorable Bloody Marys that I've ever had, so I shifted to beer after that. Our food seemed to be taking a bit, so a roamed around the premises and took it all that it had to offer. Looked like they offered complementary fruit-infused water and had a nice outside area as well.
After about 60 minutes of waiting, we learned that they neglected to actually submit our order to the kitchen, so that was a bit disappointing. After about 90 minutes of waiting, we finally received our order. It was certainly delicious and a meal that I would eat over and over again if I had access to it. They clearly had a miscommunication with their kitchen staff, but as long as its not a reoccurring theme, I would give them another try.
