Utah's best donuts found at a gas station in Kamas
Shortly after moving to Utah, my co-workers and I started discussing donuts that we could bring to the office. Someone mentioned that a gas station in the town of Kamas had the best donuts in Utah. I chuckled and didn't think more of it.
When planning a hiking trip to the Uintas, I noticed that my path would pass through Kamas and I did a little research on the donuts. Sure enough, the gas station had several articles published about their donuts and they even won a competition for the best in Utah.
Their giant fritters seemed to be their claim to fame and my research seemed to indicate the the fritters were put out just before 9:30 and they were often sold out by 10 AM.
We arrived about 10 minutes before 9:30 AM and had already heard murmurs that the fritters were sold out.
My wife waited in line while I explored the space a bit more. It seemed just as any other gas station convenience store. There were coolers of drinks, all of the tradition snacks, outdoor restrooms, and a register by the front door. The difference however was that it was an absolute zoo inside! Customers formed a "U" shaped line leading up to the donut cabinet, blocking access to coffee and fountain soda. Every time they tried to bring fresh donuts out, the employees had to duck and weave through masses of people. New customers continued to arrive and at least half of them had to be told to obey social norms of standing in line. It was arguably the worst space possible for a product with such popularity.
After waiting in line for roughly 20 minutes, we finally got access to the donut case and there was EVERYTHING inside. Cinnamon rolls, traditional donuts, cookies, turnovers, and more. Luckily we saw two Blueberry fritters that were somewhat obscured, located in the back of the case. We grabbed one of them as well as a Key Lime donut and a cinnamon roll loaded with frosting.
Eager to get out of there as soon as possible, we snapped a few photos, and got in our vehicle, enjoying the donuts on the way to our hike.
The donuts were incredible and we're eager to try more during an off-peak hour, but prepare for some stress when you visit Mirror Lake Station!
Know Before You Go
The fritters come in three flavors and are said to be put out around 9:30 AM.
If the gas station itself is full, there is plenty of parking on nearby streets.
There are often lines to get the donuts, so I wouldn't recommend stopping if you're in a rush.
Restrooms are located outside.
