Maui's largest tree consumes an entire city park!
It's interesting because typically when you look at a map and see a park, you think of green grass, perhaps a small play place for the children, and maybe a tree or two. In this park however, the tree consumes 1.9 acres, nearly the entirety of the park boundaries.
We entered the park after exiting the ferry from Lana'i. We had just endured a day of fierce winds and rain, so stopping in this park was nice break from all of the bad weather we had encountered earlier in the day.
The tree was just awe-inspiring, difficult to tract where it started and stopped. Kids could climb on its large branches or hide behind its sizable trunks. The hanging vines made the area under the canopy feel other-worldly.
It reaches 60 feet high, has 16 trunks, and was planted way back in 1873!
We sat down and took it all in, some great people watching as well as admiration for how the tree grows. If you're making the trip to/from Lanai and/or any boating cruise, be sure to carve out a few minutes for this stop.
Know Before You Go
Please speak up if you see anyone desecrating the tree. It is an absolute jewel of nature and we should do all that we can to preserve it.
Observe you children carefully if they climb the branches; injuries have been known to occur.
It is also known as Lahaina Courthouse Square and Banyan Tree Park.
