See the remains of a historic fishing site, life-filled tide pools, and incredible scenery.
With limited time and a desire to view the Cat Sanctuary before our boat left, the Kaunolu Village Site was a natural choice while cruising the island of Lana'i.
After getting our 4-Wheelers, we rode the dirt roads and then made the steep decline to this historic fishing village.
When we arrived, we were the only ones there, and really had optimal space to explore. There is a half mile hike that allows you to explore the remains of old structures and understand a bit about its history.
There is also a stone-filled beach that offered some incredible tide pools. Even with wind gusts blowing aggressively, the tide pools were pristine and teeming with life. I spotted crabs, fish, sea slugs, and more.
After exploring the beach and tide pools, I explored more of the area, finding a lighthouse, sea arch, and olivine pools. It was unfortunate that we were so short on time because there was so much to explore!
Know Before You Go
You need a vehicle with 4WD to access this site.
Use caution on the cliff edges as many of them are eroding.
Wear shoes with good traction; it was extremely slippery by the tide pools
