Hanawi Falls - Road to Hana

The most enigmatic waterfall on the Road to Hana - you never know what you'll get!

The multiple waterfalls of Hanawi Falls - Road to Hana, Maui

You can search images of Hanawi Falls all over the internet and be unlikely to find two that are similar. Just like any other waterfall, the flow is contingent on many conditions, however this is the first waterfall that I've found appearing so differently from photo to photo.

The sun, recent rainfall, and water levels in the pools are the common factors that contribute to the view you will see.

I've visited on days where the falling water was minimal, but the pool below was a neon green. I've seen it have up to six simultaneous waterfalls, where all that you see if white rushing water.

On this given day, the falls were pretty robust with multiple flows, but the sun was hitting half of the falls and leaving others in the shade. This produced a unique view with rainbows to our right and darker falls to our left.

Honestly, I think this falls is best at low flow, when the colors in the pools are much colorful, but it's always an enjoyable stop.

Know Before You Go

  • The parking area fills up quickly, but also turns over quickly so use patience

  • There isn't a defined trail to the falls, so if you are attempting to get closer, use caution.

  • Traffic is constantly passing by these falls, so watch out for oncoming vehicles.

  • Always be cautious of flash floods!
