Grater Grilled Cheese - Irvine

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

Fast Casual eatery specializing in grilled cheese and pomme frites.

Grater Grilled Cheese - The Basic 5 Grilled Cheese w/ Pomme Frites

On a recent Friday evening, my wife and I decided to try Grater Grilled Cheese, found in the Sand Canyon Plaza.

While a small interior setting, the decor was particularly enjoyable: cheese grater lamps, cheese inspired art, fake grass surrounding the restroom, and bright yellow seating booths.

The menu consisted of many grilled cheese varietals as well as hamburgers, pomme frites, and pickles. The frites come with two aiolis each. There are a variety of drink options, most notable of which is the Stubborn brand of fountain soda.

We were the only customers at our time of arrival, but within 20 minutes, over a dozen customers arrived and there was not a seat to be had. Luckily, the service is pretty quick, so seating did open up within a few minutes.

For our first visit, we went with the Basic 5 Grilled Cheese on sourdough bread with a side of pomme frites. Each grilled cheese comes with a choice of spread, which I selected Pale Ale Beer Chipotle Aioli.

Despite the simple order, it was extremely filling and we were both very pleased with our choice for dinner that evening.

One word of caution, parking can be tough to come by in this business plaza. Since several of the restaurants are fast casual, a spot should be accessible after a few minutes of patience.

Know Before You Go

  • Parking is difficult in this Plaza; there are several restaurants and not enough parking. During peak periods, you may have to park in a remote spot and walk to the location.

  • There are a lot more options on the menu beyond the traditional grilled cheese.

  • The fountain soda is by Stubborn Soda and heavily carbonated.

  • The restroom is limited to one patron at a time.

Location

Found in Sand Canyon Plaza, a few minutes off of the 5 Freeway in Irvine. Parking is notably difficult here during peak times, especially when the nearby brewery is full.
