Big Beach of Mākena State Park

Updated: Apr 13, 2019

A large beach of Maui is cleverly named "Big" Beach...and next to it is Little Beach.

The Large Expanse of Big Beach - Maui

We've been through many beaches of Maui, but each trip we tend to spend most of our time visiting the aptly named Big Beach. To the north is Little Beach (nudes) and to the south is the Secret Cove.

You can enter Big Beach via one of the parking lots or park along the road and hike in. Once you arrive at the beach, you'll notice the sheer size of it. It's one beach that offers plenty of space so that you don't feel overcrowded.

Next, you'll notice the clear water and plentiful sand. I personally like this beach because you get a clear view of what's in the water and the sand doesn't tend to be filled with rocks and other debris like other beaches.

From the beach, you can see the islands of Lana'i and Kaho'olawe (and its stark red colors on a clear, sunny day). You also get a good view of the Molokini Crater/Island Preserve, a notable snorkeling spot.

The south end of the beach is great for snorkeling as sea turtles frequent the area. To the north, you'll find eroding red cliffs and a small hiking passage to Little Beach. I wasn't able to photograph Little Beach because over half of the visitors were in the nude and I don't think they would appreciate me adding photos to the internet.

Know Before You Go

  • The parking area fills up quickly, so ensure you are arriving early to secure a space.

  • The beach to the north is a nude beach, so use caution when taking photos.

  • The south end of the beach does have some patches of coral, so be careful when snorkeling.

  • You have to go to the forest edge of the beach to find shade, so be sure to bring plenty of sunblock.
