Monkeypod Kitchen - Kannapali, Maui

The best Mai Tais on Maui?

The famous Monkeypod Mai Tai

Stay on Maui's west side, we decided to spend an evening at Whaler's Village as the island was experiencing one of its worst weather streaks of all-time.

We first sat at the bar to grab a beer before dinner, but quickly noticed everyone around us ordering a beautifully curated mai tai. What seems to make their version unique is the liliko'i (passionfruit) foam on top. They also add a sizable slice of pineapple to the side of the drink.

For our dinner, we enjoyed the fish sandwich while the sun was setting in the open air restaurant. The live music was great and it made for the perfect dinner to kickoff our Hawaiian vacation.

As we left, I couldn't help but to ask myself what exactly a monkeypod was? Turns out it is a tree found throughout the Hawaiian Islands despite actually being native to South America. There is quite the storied history to these trees; read more about them in the Resources below.

Know Before You Go

  • Having sold over 100,000 mai tias annually, this is a popular spot - be prepared to wait out a seat.

  • You must pay to park on site, but the restaurant can validate your ticket.

Location

Found in Whaler's Village on Maui's west side just off the Honoapiilani Highway. It's not exactly beachfront, but slightly recessed vs the first row of restaurants. There is paid parking on site, but the restaurant will validate your parking.
